3D Printer OS: Basics

Introducing the Layout Editor

The Layout Editor is a powerful tool allowing users to fit their files to the print bed, and add multiple files to a single print. The many tools available in this editor will be mentioned here, but feel free to try them out on your own.

While in the editor you can left click on a part to select it, holding right click allows the view to be rotated and holding middle mouse will allow the view to be panned.

Along the top left of the screen (in the blue box in the picture above) are the main part moving tools of the editor, left click on a part in the grid and select any of these tools to move, rotate, or scale the part.

The menu on the right of the screen (boxed in yellow above) will change depending on which of these tools is selected, the image above depicts the position tool.

Ideally all parts are centred on the print bed and are placed flat on the platform. Any of the Move, Rotate, and Scale tools have the options to Centre the part, place the part on the bed, and optimally rotate the part. For simple parts this is likely all that will need to be done in the layout editor.

The other tools are shown and explained below:

The Printer button is not currently used as all printers in the MakerSpace attached to 3DPrinterOS are Prusa MK3's.

The Camera button allows different views to be snapped to.

The Undo button undoes the last command (same as Control + z).

The Extra button holds a drop down menu for many tools with more complex operations.

The Extruder button is not useful for the MakerSpace printers as they only have one extruder.

The Analyze button contains several tools that can find issues with the file imported. A well made file can help to ensure a successful print!

The Add File button allows you to add a separate file to the print bed. The file must be already uploaded to 3DPrinterOS to show up in this menu!

Use the "Add File" button to add all of the letters required to spell your name!

Finally the Save button will save your new layout in the file section of 3DPrinterOS.

Boxed in green in the top left of the editor is the view menu with tools such as rulers, snap to grid, and more. Hover over the buttons to view their function.

Boxed in Red above is the parts list. It contains part specific functions such as hiding parts, or copying parts. If multiple copies or different parts are open in the editor they will all be listed here with their own menus as shown with the scuba ducks in the images.

Select your letters, scale them, place them on the bed, and align them to ensure your name is spelled cleanly on the bed. Ensure all letters are within the blue outline.

DON'T

  • Place parts in strange orientations
  • Place parts on the edge of the bed unless you have to
  • Place parts in mid air

DO

  • Place parts as flat as you can on the bed
  • Place parts near the middle of the bed

Once you have laid out everything on the print bed you wish to print (preferably centred), you can save the file using the save button or go directly to slicing by pressing the slice button in the top right. If you want to exit this menu without saving, you can click the small X in the top right of the editor.
