“Creating a Smart City block” is one of the projects we offer for students to start learning about the IoT concepts. Our smart city is a city model at the scale of a table (9 ft x 4 ft) with different sensors such as light, motion, moisture and temperature sensors, used to collect data that will be sent and processed in the cloud. The collected data will be used to improve the operations of the city through the internet.
The Smart City is designed in a way that students can learn different skills (such as modelling, 3D printing, programming and IoT) in order to complete a project. We designed a modular table with space for 12 different blocks. Each block can be a project on its own. Students have options of learning how to recreate a pre-built block, or coming up with their own design, including modelling, 3D printing and implementing an IoT project (e.g. smart light for a city block).
