Robotics/IoT Lab Access Training

Maker Multiplex and Zetta - General guidelines

The Maker Multiplex and Zetta are about community -- a place for students, faculty and staff to collaborate and make ideas come to life. As such, there are some general rules that we expect all users to follow. Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in disciplinary action.

  1. Be respectful. Respect yourself, others, and the facilities provided.
  2. Clean up after yourself. Leave your workspace at least as tidy as you found it.
  3. Put tools, equipment, and supplies where they belong.
  4. Only use equipment for which you have the appropriate training and can use safely.
  5. Only access spaces for which you have the appropriate training.
  6. These spaces are intended for project work (academic, research, work, personal); they are not for studying.
  7. If you are unsure about anything, ask for help.
  8. No open food or drink allowed in M2Z spaces during regular M2Z activities.
  9. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed.
  10. Do not make anything (in whole or in part) that can be construed as a weapon or may be considered obscene.
  11. Do not bring in or use personal tools.
  12. Do not remove raw materials from any facilities.

NOTE: When using the manufacturing facilities (3D printing, student machine shop, etc.) in M²Z, you MUST comply with both the student code of conduct for the University of Calgary and the rules listed above. Information on the student code of conduct can be found here (https://www.ucalgary.ca/student-services/student-conduct)

Robotics/IoT Lab guidelines

With respect to the Robotics/IoT Lab, there are some additional guidelines that we expect all users to follow.

  1. If working with a robot, avoid collisions with other robots or members working in the space.
  2. Make sure you have enough space around you before working with any of the robot arms.
  3. Tie up long hair when working with moving parts.
  4. Be courteous and considerate when using shared equipment. Do not change someone else's setup unless they are finished or have let you know that it's okay.
  5. Unplug all cables and turn off your device(s) before cleaning.
  6. Do not remove any robots, tools, equipment, supplies, or furniture from the Robotics/IoT Lab without permission.
  7. Do not take any sensors, actuators, lights, buildings, microcontrollers (e.g. Arduinos), microcomputers (e.g. Raspberry Pis), or other components, from the installed blocks in the Smart City.
  8. Do not modify the existing blocks in the Smart City.
  9. If you are using a Raspberry Pi, avoid making connections when it is on.
  10. Do not connect high voltage to the GPIO pins on the Raspberry Pi.
  11. Do not short circuit the pins.
  12. All users of the space must be M2Z members and must complete this Robotics/IoT Lab Access Training.
  13. If anything is amiss or if you have any questions or feedback, please let the staff in Zetta know or send an email to sse.m2z@ucalgary.ca
