Robotics/IoT Lab Access Training

Robotics/IoT Lab floor plan

Booking

Although workstations in the Robotics/IoT lab are open on a first-come, first-served basis, you can also book workspace ahead of time in order to secure access.

There are two main types of workspaces that you can book in the Robotics/IoT Lab: equipment-specific and general.

  • book an *equipment-specific workspace (e.g. *ABB YuMi® workstation, *Kinova Gen3 workstation) to secure access to equipment that you want to use, in addition to any other equipment available in the room. You must book the appropriate equipment-specific workspace to use blue equipment.
  • book a general spot ("Workspace in Robotics/IoT Lab") to get access to any available workstations, green equipment, and yellow equipment (that you have completed training for) on a first-come, first-served basis. Note that this does not allow you access to blue equipment.

To book a workspace, please use the following link:

Checking in

When you arrive, you must first check in using the check-in station at the door of the Digital Design Lab (ICT 216). If you have an existing booking, you can simply tap your card. If you are dropping in, you can see what spots (both equipment-specific and general) are available using the check-in station.

If the room is not open, you can ask the staff in Zetta (ICT 215/216/224) for a loaner card. You will trade your personal UCalgary unicard for a loaner. The loaner card will get you access to the room.

Finishing up

When you leave:

  1. Ensure all tools, equipment and components are powered off and returned to their appropriate places.
    • If you are working on an ongoing project, please discuss storage options with the Zetta staff.
  2. Clean up your workstation and any other areas you may have used.
  3. If you borrowed a loaner card, bring the loaner card back to the Digital Design Lab and the staff will return your personal unicard.

Equipment Usage

Special considerations

If you are working on any blue equipment in the Robotics/IoT Lab, please ensure you book the corresponding workstation. You cannot work on these robots if you have booked a general spot.

Robots from the Robotics/IoT Lab should be used within Zetta. If you need storage for your ongoing project, you can talk to the Zetta staff.

Equipment access trainings and learning resources are constantly being developed, please check back regularly for the most up-to-date information.
