Robotics/IoT Lab Access Training

Interested in using the Robotics/Internet of Things Lab? Take this access training to get started!

Welcome to the Robotics/IoT Lab

To gain access to the Robotics/Internet of Things (IoT) Lab in ICT 215 during open hours, read through this online training and pass the quiz on D2L.

In this makerspace lab, you can find a variety of robots for all skill levels, from small devices like EZ-Robots and Spheros, to advanced industrial devices such as the ABB YuMi® robot and the Kinova Gen3 arm.

In addition to robots, we also have gaming-grade laptops with Linux and Windows operating systems and ROS, as well as multiple electronics and mechanical components that are available for you to work on your own robotics and mechatronics or IoT projects. Components we have in the Robotics/IoT Lab include: Arduino UNO boards, Raspberry Pi microcomputers, motor drivers, DC motors, gears, and sensors (e.g. ultrasonic, line trackers, limit switches).

Robotics/IoT Lab room summary

The Robotics/IoT Lab (ICT 215) is the central location to find equipment and tools related to robotics and Internet of Things (IoT) development. Here you will find open workspaces, demos, projects that you can participate in, and supplies/equipment for robotics and IoT development, such as:

  • ABB YuMi® (dual-arm robot)
  • Kinova Gen3 (single-arm robot)
  • EZ-Robots
  • Spheros
  • VeX Robotics kits and parts
  • Turtle Bot
  • Elev-8 Quadcopter
  • Robotis OpenManipulator
  • NAO
  • Laptops for using ROS (Robot Operating System)
  • sensors
  • actuators
  • microcontrollers (e.g. Arduinos)
  • microcomputers (e.g. Raspberry Pis)

One of the main features of the Robotics/IoT Lab is our Smart City. If you're interested in IoT but you're not sure where to start, the Smart City is a great platform to learn about IoT.

Getting started

If you are already an M2Z member, follow along this Robotics/IoT Lab Access Training and successfully pass the associated quiz to get started.

The Robotics/IoT Lab Access Training comprises two main components:

  1. This online guide, which covers:
    • expectations and basic ground rules for users of this space,
    • an introduction to the workspaces within the Robotics/IoT Lab,
    • general safety information,
    • the basic process for how to access and book workstations,
    • an overview of equipment available in the room
  2. An online quiz, administered via D2L.

We ask that you study the material found in this guide before completing the quiz. Instructions on how to take the quiz are covered within this guide. Once you have passed the quiz, you will be allowed to work in the Robotics/IoT Lab.
