Lathe and Mill: Crash Course

A hands-on workshop teaching you the basics of the lathe and mill by creating a three-piece pen holder.

Introduction

This crash course is an in-person workshop where you will learn the basics of using the mill and lathe by making a pen holder. Before attending the workshop, please go through this online guide.

Prerequisites

Prior to taking this workshop, please ensure that you successfully complete the following:

Overview

This crash course has two components, (1) this online guide, and (2) the in-person workshop.

For this online guide, we ask that you read the mill and lathe SOPs found on the next page before coming to the workshop.

During the in-person workshop, you will learn about the following:

Machine Shop

  1. Shop safety
  2. Interpreting blueprints and drawings
  3. Basic dimensioning techniques
  4. Basic measuring (micrometers, digital calipers, digital readouts)

Lathes

  1. Lathe safety
  2. Work-holding devices such as chucking and tailstock
  3. Simple lathe operations like turning, taper turning, facing, parting, drilling, and tapping

Milling machines

  1. Mill safety
  2. Work-holding devices like vises
  3. Simple mill operations like pocket milling, side milling, fly-cutting, drilling, and counterboring

Further training opportunities

After reading this guide, you can register for the in-person component of the workshop.

Once you have completed the workshop, you will be able to use the conventional lathes and mills (with supervision) in the Student Machine Shop, which is located in ENC 09.
