Paint Booth Access Training

Space Usage

Note: Only one person/group in the Paint Booth at a time.

Booking

There are two main types of workspaces that you can book in the Paint Booth.

  • *Workspace in Paint Booth denotes the primary booking: if you are working by yourself, this is the spot you should book. If you are working in a group, at least one person must book this spot.
  • Secondary spot in Paint Booth denotes a secondary (additional) spot: if you are working in a group, all additional group members can book a secondary spot. The Paint Booth has a maximum capacity of 4 people (one booked in the primary workspace and the other 3 booked in secondary spots).

Checking in

When you arrive, you must first check in at HQ (ENA 03).

  1. Check in using the check-in station at the door. If you have an existing booking, you can simply tap your card. If you are dropping in, you can see if the space is available using the check-in station.
    • IMPORTANT: If you are working in a group, all group members must be M2Z members and must check in.
  2. Ask the staff in HQ for the key to access the room. You will need to trade your personal UCalgary unicard for the keys.
  3. Note that there are two points of entry, the side door and the main door. These are not locked however the main control panel will be. The key is to access the panel.

  1. Prior to using the booth, you should check intake, outtake, and air filters. None of the filters should be excessively dirty, and the air filter indicator should be a blue shade. If it is pink or white let a staff member know immediately. Intake filters are right above the large bay doors and the outtake filters are to the left of the man door.

Working in the space

There are hooks for hanging up workpieces, as well as some stands. Make sure that if these are used to clean up after yourself and dispose of any empty spray canisters into the appropriate bins. Any drips should be clean up prior to it fully curing. We do not provide any materials or supplies for the paint booth so please bring in your own supplies as needed. If you have any questions, feel free to ask the staff in HQ or send an email to sse.m2z@ucalgary.ca.

In the event that you are working with multiple people please limit the total number of people in the booth working at the same time to 4 people.

Finishing up

Prior to leaving:

  1. Ensure all workspaces are clean and garbage disposed of
  2. Any empty spray cans are placed in the EMPTY CANS box as shown below
  3. Ensure air line is closed
  4. Turn off the lights and close all doors
  5. Lock the main control panel properly

Operations

There are four options for the paint booth operation.

  1. Lights
    • This option is used for setting up your paint material. The fans and temperature control are off, and as such should not be used when actively spraying or painting.
  2. Spray
    • Select this option when the workpiece has been set up. Ensure that all doors are closed, and wait until the fans kick in (may take a few minutes to activate). The temperature should be set to approximately ambient (70°F) and the pressure level should be between 0.05 and 0 inches of water on the left side of the gauge.
  3. Bake
    • Once the spray or paint has been sufficiently applied, it is possible to decrease the time required for the paint to cure by enabling bake mode. Typically bake mode should be enable after spraying, at a temperature of 150°F for approximately 20-30 minutes. At this point another coat can be applied, but this varies by manufacturing, so be sure to consult the manufacturer of the paint for further details.
  4. Cool Down
    • After the spraying and baking procedure, the cool down procedure should be used to purge the chamber of any remaining aerosols or fumes. This cycle should be run at 100°F for 5 minutes and after the timer it will automatically shut itself off.

In addition to these, there is also compressed air available inside of the booth for use. Ensure that the handle for air on the outside of the enclosure is turned on to use it.
