Student Machine Shop Access Training

Space usage

Booking

There are two main type of workspaces that you can book in the shop: equipment-specific and general. 

  • book an *equipment-specific workspace (i.e. *Lathe workstation, *Milling machine workstation, *Waterjet workstation) to secure access to equipment that you want to use, in addition to any other equipment available in the room.
  • book a general spot ("Workspace in the Student Machine Shop") to get access to any available workstations and equipment (that you have completed training for, if required) on a first-come, first-served basis.

On arrival

Whenever you use the Student Machine Shop, please:

  1. Wear safety glasses and steel toe covers (if you do not have your own safety boots).
  2. Check in using the check-in computer.
  3. Let the supervising staff know what you are working on.

Equipment usage

Special considerations

If you are working on any blue equipment in the shop, you must let the supervisor know what you are working on.

Equipment access trainings and learning resources are constantly being developed, please check back regularly for the most up-to-date information.

Room equipment details

Green equipment

Equipment in this category does not require any additional training prior to use. Once you have access to the room, you may use any equipment labelled with a green equipment sticker.

  • Light hand tools, including hammers, screwdrivers, clamps, wire cutters, vise grips, vises, pliers, tin snips, aviation snips, box cutters, saws, wrenches, sockets, files, chisels, planes, etc.
  • Hand drill
  • Small power tools, including reciprocating saw, jig saw, nibbler, electric shear

Yellow equipment

Equipment in this category requires completion of additional training prior to use. Once you have completed the training, you may use the equipment without supervision.

  • Band saws
  • Grinder
  • Drill press

Blue equipment

Equipment in this category requires completion of additional training (see links below) prior to use. Once you have completed the training, you may use the equipment with supervision.

  • Milling machine
  • Lathe
  • Waterjet

Red equipment

Equipment in this category is operated by SSE Technical Services staff only. To request the equipment service, you must first complete additional training.

There is no red equipment in the Student Machine Shop.
