Working with the HoloLens 2: Basics

Discover the world of augmented reality through the HoloLens 2. Familiarize yourself with the HoloLens and learn how to control 3D holograms.

What is the HoloLens?

Microsoft HoloLens 2 is a pair of mixed reality smart glasses developed and manufactured by Microsoft. It offers one of the most comfortable and immersive mixed reality experience available.

What is Mixed Reality?

Get your HoloLens 2 ready to use

Adjust fit:

Place the HoloLens 2 on your head. If you wear eyeglasses, leave them on. The brow pad should sit comfortably on your forehead and the back band should sit in the middle-back of your head.

If necessary, extend the headband by turning the adjustment wheel, and then loosen the overhead strap.

Attach and detach the overhead strap

The overhead strap isn't required, but it can make wearing HoloLens 2 more comfortable during long periods of use.

To detach the front of the overhead strap, unhook the strap and slide it through the retractable loop on the brow pad. To reattach it, pull out the loop and slide the strap back through.

To detach the back of the overhead strap, press the button below each connection tab and pull gently. To reattach it, push the connection tabs back into the slots until they click.

HoloLens basics

  1. The HoloLens has a power button on the back-right side, holding it for a few seconds will start the HoloLens.
  2. To put the HoloLens on, use the adjustment wheel to expand the headband.
  3. With the HoloLens in place, tighten the adjustment wheel by turning to the right, until the headband is comfortable.
  4. When wearing the HoloLens, the brightness buttons are on the back-left side of the device and the volume buttons are on the back-right side of the device.

You can rotate the visor up while wearing the HoloLens, which makes it easier to view and interact with real life objects, without taking the HoloLens off.

Getting started

  1. When the HoloLens first turns on, sign in using the pin or password provided.
  2. The start menu will come up after logging in. Calibrate your eyes for the HoloLens by going into Settings, then System, then Calibration, then Run Eye Calibration.
  3. Follow the on screen instructions and the HoloLens will then go through an eye calibration to adjust the HoloLens to the user.

The hand-tracking frame

HoloLens has sensors that can see a few feet to either side of you. When you use your hands, you'll need to keep them inside that frame, or HoloLens won't see them. However, the frame moves with you as you move around.

Touching holograms

Touching the Holograms in the HoloLens is done as if the Hologram is in front of you and touch it as if you would any other real life object.

Hand ray

When there are no holograms near your hands, the touch cursor will hide automatically and hand rays will appear from the palm of your hands. Hand rays allow you to interact with holograms from a distance.

Air tap

To select something using hand ray, follow these steps. Use a hand ray from your palm to target the item. You don't need to raise your entire arm, you can keep your elbow low and comfortable. Point your index finger straight up toward the ceiling. To perform the air tap gesture, pinch your thumb and index finger together and then quickly release them.

Grab and scroll using hand ray

To grab a hologram or scroll app window content using hand ray, start with an air tap, but keep your fingers together instead of releasing them. To scroll app window content, air tap and hold on the content and then move your hand ray up and down or side to side. To grab an app window or hologram, target the app title bar or hologram with your hand ray and then air tap and hold. To open context menus, air tap and hold with your hand ray.

Rotating and resizing

Grab and use the resize handles that appear on the corners of 3D holograms and app windows to resize them. For 3D holograms, grab and use the rotate handles that appear on the vertical edges of the bounding box.

HoloLens tips app

HoloLens Tips App is an app downloaded in the HoloLens that lets you explore all the controls in a fairly simple way. It is a quick way to start getting comfortable with the controls before moving on to something else. The App can be found in the All apps tab on the start menu. Once the app has started, clear instructions will be given and follow the instructions until they are completed.

Downloading apps

Apps can be found by opening the Microsoft Store from the Start menu. To download apps, you'll need to be signed in with a Microsoft account. Some apps are free and can be downloaded right away. Apps that require a purchase require you to be signed in to the Store with your Microsoft account and have a valid payment method. The downloaded apps can be found in the Apps tab from the Start menu.

Mixed Reality Toolkit (MRTK)

Basic development for the HoloLens can be done through the Mixed Reality Toolkit (MRTK). MRTK is an open-source, cross-platform development kit for mixed reality applications. It provides a cross-platform input system, foundational components, and common building blocks for spatial interactions.
