Soldering THT

Workshop I - Soldering Through Hole Technology

Introduction

Welcome to Workshop 1, your first step into the world of electronics! In this session, you'll learn the basics of through-hole soldering—an essential skill for building electronics. Whether you’re a total beginner or just want to brush up, this hands-on workshop is designed to be fun and approachable. By the end of this session, you’ll be soldering like a pro and ready to take on more exciting projects!

Objective

The main goal of this workshop is to help you feel comfortable with through-hole soldering as you dive into a fun, hands-on project. By the end of the workshop, you will:

  • Know how to safely handle a soldering iron and attach components to a PCB.
  • Be able to tell the difference between good and bad solder joints (we’ll show you what to look for!).
  • Finish your first electronics project and feel confident moving on to more advanced techniques.

Tools & Equipment

Here’s what you’ll be using during the workshop:

Soldering Station

A complete setup that includes the soldering iron, temperature control, and iron holder.

Soldering Iron

Your main tool for heating and connecting components.

Solder Wire

The material that creates the connection between your components and the PCB.

PCB (Printed Circuit Board)

Where all the magic happens—this is what you’ll be soldering onto.

Wire Cutter

Handy tools for trimming excess leads and wires.

Sponge/Brass Wool

To keep your soldering iron tip clean and in top shape.

Fume Extractor

Used to remove harmful fumes produced during soldering, ensuring a safe working environment.

Two-Tone Siren Kit

Your project kit—complete with everything you need to build your siren!

Tools & Equipment Safety

Safety first, always! Here are a few tips to keep you safe while you solder:

  • Soldering Iron Safety: The iron gets hot—really hot—so always place it in the stand when not in use, and be careful not to touch the tip.
  • Ventilation: Soldering can release fumes, so work in a well-ventilated area or use a fan/fume extractor.
  • Eye Protection: Protect those eyes! Wear safety glasses to shield from splashes and bits of solder.
  • Handling Tools: Always unplug your soldering iron when you’re done, and make sure everything is turned off and put away.
  • Workstation Clean-Up: When the workshop’s over, don’t forget to tidy up. Toss out scraps, clean your surface, and return your tools to their proper spots. It keeps things safe and organized for your next project!

Project: Two-Tone Siren Soldering Kit

For this workshop, you’ll be assembling a Two-Tone Siren Soldering Kit! This kit includes two flashing LEDs that blink like a siren, while the circuit itself produces two distinct tones. You’ll be soldering components like resistors, capacitors, and transistors onto the PCB—practicing good soldering techniques along the way. We’ll guide you in spotting and fixing any mistakes (like cold solder joints), so you finish with a working, buzzing, and flashing siren that you can proudly show off. Let’s get soldering!
